SBN – “Explore a Secular Dharma” Fall 2026

In this online course we will explore the key ideas and practices of secular Buddhism, an important trend which has become more prominent among Buddhist practitioners in recent years. The course will provide self-identified secular Buddhists and those who are curious about secular Buddhism the opportunity to gain a greater appreciation and understanding of a secular approach to the dharma.

Course Objectives

In this course we will:

  • Identify and explain the key concepts of secular Buddhism
  • Contrast secular Buddhism with traditional forms or lineages of Buddhism
  • Sketch a vision of secular Buddhist practice for individuals and communities

Course Calendar and Schedule – October/November 2026

Module 1: Introduction to secular Buddhism (Oct. 5 – Oct. 12)

Module 2: The heart of secular Buddhism – the four tasks (Oct. 13 – Oct. 19)

Module 3: A secular eightfold path (Oct. 20 – Oct. 26)

Module 4: The role of meditation in a secular dharma path (Oct. 27 – Nov. 2)

Module 5: A flourishing life for all (Nov. 3 – Nov. 9)

Zoom meetings with the instructor will occur on the last scheduled day for each module.
